What do you pay attention to when you buy a paddle board? The length, width and volume are among other important properties. These properties all influence the stability, manoeuvrability and speed of the paddle board. These are the main points when choosing an inflatable SUP.

Which size paddle board is right for you?

There are many available lengths. You have lengths from 8 feet (surf models) to as much as 15 feet (race models). The longer and narrower the board is, the more speed you can make (depending on your own stability). The length and width therefore affect the speed and manoeuvrability of the stand-up paddle board.

As a rule, we say, the longer the paddle board, the more agile it is, which makes it faster. And the shorter the paddle board is, the slower you progress while paddling, but on the other hand more manoeuvrable compared to long boards.

For most recreational paddlers starting out, a 10'4, 11 or 11'6 feet paddle board is a good starting point. Just remember that the max weight user can vary by brand and type.

What width sup board do I need?

The width of the paddle board has a lot of influence on its stability. The wider the board, the more stability the board will have. The narrower the board, the less stable it will be.

Most boards sold have an average width of 30 to 32 inches. Novice suppers who are just starting out in supping recommend a paddle board with a width of between 30 and 34 inches. The stand-up paddle boards with a width of 34 inches give extra stability for the heavier and novice person. The paddle boards with a width of 28 to 32 inches are a bit more suitable for smaller people. For people who want to paddle just a bit sportier and faster, then a from 28 to 30-inch board might also be good choices. This does depend on your own stability!
If you just want to go for relaxed supping and touring, then it is advisable to choose a paddle board that is between 29 and 32 inches. The difference between various widths can have a big impact on the stability of the sups. Even if one inch seems like a small difference! For women, it is not nice to have a wide sup because women are generally less broadly built than men. It could also be that you want to do a bit more of the sport (racing) and/or are more experienced. Then people often choose a slightly narrower board. The most commonly sold narrower paddle boards are often between 25 and 29 inches. To make the right choice, it is also important to consider your body weight and balance.
